What is the EPIC Participation Framework™?
The EPIC Framework is a practical, research‑grounded way of thinking about inclusion. It helps organisations, educators, and families understand why participation so often fails – and what to do about it.
Instead of asking “What’s wrong with this child?” EPIC asks:
“What invisible conditions – on both sides – are making participation hard?”
EPIC is not a behaviour management program or a quick‑fix checklist. It is a participation design framework that shifts responsibility from the individual to the environment.

Why the Framework exists: The Participation Visibility & Cost Gap
Inclusion fails even when people genuinely try – because two things stay invisible:
Hidden expectations – rules no one explains. Children cannot meet what they cannot see.
Hidden barriers – everyday routines or environments that unintentionally make participation harder. Organisations cannot remove barriers they cannot see.
On top of this, neurodivergent children pay a Participation Tax – the extra sensory, social, emotional, and cognitive effort required to stay in a space not designed for them. Hidden expectations are only one part of that tax.
When the tax exceeds a child’s regulation capacity, overload happens. Behaviour or withdrawal is not a choice – it’s a signal that participation has already failed.
EPIC closes this gap by making expectations visible, barriers removable, and the Participation Tax affordable.
The Participation Pathway: Access → Engage → Belong
Belonging isn’t where you start. It’s what happens when participation works well over time. EPIC breaks this journey into 3 stages:
Access: Can the person get in safely and make it through the first few sessions?
Engage: Can the person stay involved without unsustainable effort?
Belong: Does the person want - and feel able - to come back?
Returnability (the desire and ability to return) is EPIC’s primary evidence of belonging.
Key Concepts at a Glance
Belonging is the Goal
Belonging comes from the sustained experience of being accepted, safe, and able to participate authentically. Participation without belonging is not inclusion.
Participation Tax
The total invisible effort a child spends to participate (sensory, social, emotional, cognitive, transition, recovery).
Hidden Expectations
Unspoken rules about behaviour, communication, or routine that no one explains. Children can’t meet expectations they can’t see.
Hidden Barriers
Everyday routines, physical setups, or policies that unintentionally make participation harder. Organisations can’t remove barriers they can’t see.
Regulation Wave
The ebb and flow of a person’s nervous system between overstimulation, engagement, and understimulation, and the environment’s influence on this state. Participation works best when the environment adapts to the wave, not against it.
Co‑regulation
The environment actively helping a child regulate (calm adults, predictable routines, sensory adjustments).
Returnability
The desire and ability to return; EPIC’s primary evidence of belonging.
What the EPIC Participation Framework is NOT
Not a behaviour management program

Not a compliance or behaviour modification system
Not a checklist‑based inclusion audit
Not a replacement for professional clinical care
EPIC doesn’t remove all challenge. It makes challenge sustainable.
Where the EPIC Participation Framework Informs my Work
The EPIC Participation Framework underpins everything I offer – from parent courses and downloadable tools to organisational consultancy and future training.
However, certification and licensing (for individuals and organisations to implement the EPIC Framework independently) are not yet available. I’m currently building the educational content that will make that possible.
