Student Profile:

Marita is a highly sensory-seeking student who is minimally-speaking and uses a combination of gestures and a visual communication book to express needs. She shows strong physical memory and loves predictable routines. She thrives on consistent structure and a calm approach but can disengage suddenly if overwhelmed by loud noises, unclear instructions, or shifting expectations.

Marita works well when:

  1. • She has access to visual schedules and cue card

  2. • Instructions are brief, clear, and paired with gestures or visuals

    • She can anticipate the next activity

    • Her instructor stays calm and consistent

    • Her sensory needs are met through regulated movement (e.g., jumping, deep pressure, heavy work)

Reflections - Engagement & Predictability:

• What can you do to help Marita know what’s coming next in a lesson?

• How could you set up a routine for each activity that helps Marita feel safe and ready?

Reflections - Behaviour & Redirection:

• How can you tell when Marita is getting dysregulated, and what might you do in that moment?

• What’s your plan if Marita walks away from the group unexpectedly?

Reflections - Instruction, Adaptation & Communication:

• How can you use gestures or modelling instead of words with Marita?

• What role might visual cards or objects have in your communication?

Reflections - Motor Skills & Karate Techniques:

• What parts of a basic punch or kick could Marita learn first?

• How might you use physical prompts or hand-over-hand to help her start a movement?

Reflections - Personal Support & Growth:

• What could you ask the senior instructor if you’re struggling to understand Marita’s communication?

• How will you know if your support is helping Marita succeed?
